I watched the clip from 20/20 and it is a very interesting tradition. But what I don't agree with is the age at which rumspringa begins. 16 years old is so young to be putting those kind of demands on a child and making them think and even possibly decide what they want to do for themselves for the rest of their life. Why is it that it was decided to start rumspringa at that age? I am sure because it has always been done that way and back in the day, kids married much much younger than they do now and actually started having families at that time.

I was just thinking about why they would have rumspringa start at such a young age. Possibly because of the age the amish used to start having children and establishing families. Girls were married off at much younger ages than in other parts of society. What do you think? What do other people in our class think?
